| The hydropower plant Lower Mettur in Tamil Nadu State, India, is utilized by the Cauvery river. The Cauvery river is considered as a holy river in South India. It rises in the Western ghats and flows through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu before it joins the Bay of Bengal.
Near the town of Salem, the 155 km² Stanley Reservoir is impounded by the 154 meter high Mettur Dam. The dam provides irrigation facilities to Salem, Trichy and Thanjavur districts and is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It was completed already in 1934,. the total length of the dam is 1700 meters. Lower Mettur consists of four power plants located in cascade. Two sets of bulb turbines and generators are installed in each plant.
