Kaminojiri II, Japan

Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. Japan

Kaminojiri II hydropower station is located on the Agno River and equipped with a vertical bulb turbine and generator of
14 MW output at a head of around 16 meters. As the most suitable locations for large-capacity hydropower stations have mostly been developed in Japan, the focus is rather on small-capacity plants providing lower economical output. Therefore, existing power stations are modernized and new power stations are set up at already existing dams. As a result, Voith Fuji Hydro, the Japan-based entity of Voith Siemens Hydro jointly developed together with the owner of the Kaminojiri II power plant advanced technologies for vertical bulb turbines and generators.

Main features of the newly-developed vertical bulb turbine and generator unit include the reduction of space needed for the power house, the increase of power output, higher flexibility for selecting the power house location, and low maintenance requirements by reducing auxiliary equipment.

For this improvement Voith Fuji Hydro received the 51. Ohm Technical Prize. The prestigious award, recognizes substantial contributions to the advancement of electrical technologies and promotes inventions, improvements or research work that are expected to be technically outstanding achievements and provide considerable innovative accomplishments.
