Ghazi Barotha, Pakistan

Water and Power Development Authority of Pakistan (WAPDA)

The Ghazi Barotha project is located approximately 100 km from Islamabad on the Indus River in north west Pakistan. It involves the construction of a partial river diversion at Ghazi, 7 km downstream from the Tarbela dam. The barrage diverts the water into a 52 km concrete-lined channel and delivers the water to the powerhouse at Barotha lower down the river near the confluence of the Indus and Haro rivers. In this reach the Indus River drops by 76 m in a distance of 63 km. After passing through the powerhouse, diverted water is returned to the Indus.

One of the most important features of the project is that it provides power peaking capacity throughout the year with full power generation during May and June, when there is a reduced generation from other hydropower projects as a result of low reservoir levels.

Voith Siemens Hydro’s share:

  • 5 vertical Francis turbines (295 MW)
  • 5 electric-hydraulic governors
  • cooling water and drainage systems

Start of operation: May 2003
