| In December 1994, after some time of development, design and construction, a new storage pump was successfully installed and put into operation in the Säckingen underground hydroelectric power plant. A new concept was implemented here, due to the forward-thinking and cooperation of Schluchseewerk AG.
Each old unit consists of a turbine, coupling, motor/generator, hydraulic torque converter and single suction/2-stage storage pump. The oldest of the four pumps had been replaced, with the following requirements:
- increasing discharge by 20 %
- reducing cavitation
- limiting the pump starting power to 38 MW (existing torque converter capacity)
- installing the pump within the existing constraints: coupling it with the converter as well as with the upstream and downstream spherical valves.
Commissioning and trial operation were concluded in May 1995. |
