Research & development

Ever-improving performance, higher economic effectiveness, reliability and operational safety over many years – this is what we aim for at Corporate Technology, the heart of Voith Siemens Hydro’s R & D in the Brunnenmühle at the headquarters in Heidenheim.

It takes more than comprehensive know-how and decades of experience to determine the best solution for developing the hydropower potential of a specific site. Despite the high level of accuracy offered by computer-aided computations for most flow parameters, and machine designs that are based upon them, painstaking model testing is still necessary in order to quickly and reliably translate theoretical designs into economically optimized  solutions. Having an edge in terms of knowledge and capabilities means, always being a step ahead of the competition.

At Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation talented scientists and engineers, guarantee our position of leadership through basic research, ongoing system and product improvements, and the evolution of our engineering methods. Research and development are managed by Corporate Technology, which also coordinates hydraulics, engineering, and manufacturing.

Our activities are best summed up as interdisciplinary work on a global scale, across national borders.

Apart from Heidenheim the US facility in York includes the only laboratory for ongoing hydro-electric research in the United States. In addition to the experience with new units, the staff in York have unparalleled knowledge in the rehabilitation and uprating of existing equipment.

Above this, our location in São Paulo is an important research center for generators and electrical equipment.
